Westchester editor gets ready for trout season
Growing up in Pleasantville and live as an adult in Dobbs Ferry and Katonah, Jay Cassell looks forward to April trout fishing in the counties of Westchester and Putnam. This year is no different. Well, maybe a little different.
"Before I hit my favorite local haunts," Cassell said, "I will take a trip I dreamed all my life."
As editor of Outdoor Life magazine and Sports far and currently sit near the top of the masthead as associate editor at Field & Stream, Cassell had a chance to fish in many destinations across the country and the world.This week, he left for New Zealand. It is a legendary land of beautiful trout streams, and browns and rainbows that have been imported from the island prospered.
"Me say the sky on average 4 pounds when I'm fishing," said Cassell.
These fish in an exotic location to the other side of the world are what dreams are made, but the reality Cassell - the Amawalk, Eastern and Western branches of the Croton River and several creeks productive, he prefers not to mention - it provide high expectations as well, and he is already preparing for its debut in April outings.
Cassell is a fly fisherman, and that means that in these weeks leading up to the April 1 opener, he was checking, organizing and cleaning.
He was checking his gear to ensure it is in order. It looked over his clothes.
"I am comfortable that my waders will not leak, because as soon as I have a problem with leaks, I tinker," he said. "Last fall, leaks have been supported then. "
Tips for less confident, however, is to test your hip waders in the bathtub to see if tiny bubbles reveal leaks that mysteriously formed during the winter.
"As for my tackle ready, I cleaned my lines checked my fly and leaders to see if they were worn," said Cassell. "Actually, I changed all my leaders, contained knots of charge and without scratches are a strong link should not let me down.
