Blyderivier Canyon Man
Outdoors With Rosie Mitchell: Ramblings of a workaholic in paradise
It seems strange to be writing from Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga, SA - a world away from life manic I was driving all this year, and yet not really retired at all! Because we can make phone calls, email and go on the web, using a "dongle" - albeit at a pace of a turtle antique attention deficit, not a bit slow to jerky and then forget why he is still on the way, and cogitate a bit quiet! I am not complaining.I have never been free to go on a trip like this, with my hard work per week, depending, first, the mania pleased to CAMA, and then the culmination of two years regular work which poses a must press times 52 weeks per year - the very recent, Restaurants of the Year Awards 2009 and 2010.
I knew I would need a break badly but he slipped up out of nowhere and just bit me!So, once again in full panic mode blind and completely unable to let go, with a series of wild nights later to try to be halfway ready to leave with a clear conscience, I just had to put the work with me - right into this paradise place - somewhere, through which I always wanted to hike! Booked a last service vehicles wait to minute.
As usual, we were on the road three hours later than expected. So we arrived at One Stop - Tshipise - too slowly and long after dark, but with an edge, fortunately quickly crossing.I like the scenery on the trip to Beitbridge, the Whaleback mountain massifs rising like sentinels severely obese and caring for nothing.
The bridge was fast, pleasant surprise, the picturesque anecdote of the evening as hundreds of tiny quelias who took the rest in one of the fever trees outside the SA border complex inside the courtyard, which took us by surprise when we entered, bedraggled, tired and road by then, dying to get to and flop on a bed.Their incessant chatter, whispers and muttering to themselves and each other as they settled for another safe night's sleep, drew our attention to this phenomenon small but nice, which entertains no doubt by many more just passing us!
